Sony VHS commercial 1988
tron 3 is official so it seems
and that means it’s time for the second wave of special snowflakes that make their claim to fame having watched the first tron movie
As one of said special snowflakes who wore out that VHS tape in the early 80s, I’d like to be the first to say NYAH.~
(Nah but seriously let’s not play this game. First-wave fans are awesome, 2010 fans are awesome, art/fic/rp fans are awesome, lurker fans are awesome, saw-it-for-Daft-Punk-but-ended-up-liking-it-mostly fans are awesome, DECONSTRUCT THE NARRATIVE fans are awesome, gamer fans are awesome, only-discovered-it-after-Uprising fans are awesome, Ascension fans will be awesome too.)
Too small of a fandom and too little respect from Disney to start jockeying. And if any of the first-wave types would like to challenge that? Well, I’m old enough to have seen the first film’s release in an actual theater. *chuckle*

80s AOR at it’s best - Galaxy Rangers song “Somewhere a Heart”… so damn uplifting and great! Love it…
(sung by Myles Hunter / Refugee)
This series had one HELL of a soundtrack.
I am giving in and watching TRON: Legacy while I write. I have seen this film at least twenty-five times.
I’ve seen the first one…enough to break a VHS tape. I’ve only been able to sit through Legacy about 4 times.
what’s your favorite part?

THE OTP: Tron/Yori - Especially when you find that deleted scene and the novelization. First of all, it’s probably the only thing in that universe that screams “Disney.” Secondly, is something you notice only after watching it enough times to break a VHS tape. They are an amazing partnership. Tron handles all the combat, and she can’t fight at all…but she handles everything else. The hideout, the planning (deleted scene), the diplomacy at the I/O Tower, building and piloting that Solar Sailer. It’s true she has a brief moment of despair after she believes her mate is dead and she’s seen her old friend hauled off to execution, but she snaps out quick enough when opportunity presents itself.
M/F OTP: See above. But second place goes to Jet/Mercury. The power dynamics, especially in the verse I play with, are so gloriously messy. The current champion of Encom system and her apprentice on one hand, “deity and mortal” dynamic on the other.
M/M OTP: Tough call, since none really fall into OTP status, or have caveats attached. Flynn/Alan? Only with Lora’s full knowledge and permission. Same with any Flynn/Tron? Yori had better be giving permission or confirmed de-rezzed. (This is why I’m down with anyone who’s got it in them to write an OT3 - they’re as bad as 11 and the Ponds.) The one thing I do headcanon is that Clu’s domination of “Rinzler” extended into “private time,” but Clu is one seriously sick SOB,
F/F OTP: I can very easily see Paige/Quorra as a tragic, doomed affair. Because of lies and circumstances, Quorra saves Paige only for her to become one of the enemy. Paige not wanting to be vulnerable and burned again would also explain why things with Beck are so rocky.
Fav Female: Yori. There’s just enough characterization to work with, and just enough to make you cuss out Disney for ignoring she existed in Legacy, though in light of how grimdark Legacy was, it’s probably for the better. They’d probably just kill her off-camera or worse.
Fav Male: Jet Bradley. When we see humans interacting with the electronic world in canon or in fanfic, they’re pretty calm about the revelation that “we’re the gods here” (granted, Sam didn’t get a chance to think that implication through). But then we get this one guy who thought it through, then proceeded to go “Oh shit!” (assuming, as the comic implied, that Blue was a near-perfect copy psychologically) It was also wonderfully refreshing to hear someone in that universe put his foot down and say “We made this world, we have a responsibility and duty to take care of it!"
Least Fav Female: Radia. I really can’t see anything that would indicate why she was such a good leader. She’s just so underdone that I can’t work with what’s there.
Least Fav Male: Pavel. He’s so damn obvious about trying to pull a Starscream that I wonder why Tesler hasn’t made him eat a disc already.
Why I joined the fandom: I loved it since I was a kid (as did my twin - one of the few movies we can 100% agree on), and watched it obsessively when I was in college to remind me why I signed up for the sadism that is a Comp Sci major, but the actual fandom? There is a local convention party crew who put on a Tron themed room party, complete with a dude in Castor cosplay spinning Daft Punk tunes in a side room. One step in and…Let’s just say the first thing I did when I got home was went looking for fanfic. I NEEDED that shit. I stumbled on the kink meme, and ended up being the idiot who wrote genfic on a kink meme.

A pair of seven year old twins, a VHS tape, and a mom that would watch anything Disney. The twin and I saw it and it was AMAZING. There are few movies that beautiful to look at. It was one of the few films my twin and I could completely agree on seeing, we played the Intellivision games (I could beat her on Solar Sailer. She had better reflexes for Deadly Discs, and we collaborated on Maze-a-Tron), and my twin was even the one who took me to Legacy (which I was ambivalent about) by going “No, you REALLY got to see this.” My sis and I don’t talk much anymore, which is sad. So, I’ll settle for watching old movies and listening to Duran Duran when I miss her most.
When I got into college, I watched it obsessively to remind myself why I was putting up with the nightmarish workload of a comp sci degree. Computers were beautiful. They were there to help people, we just needed to know how to treat them. I was also pretty shocked at what Lisberger managed to sneak past the radar. This was the ascension of the Religious Right in America, and he managed to put “humans are unknowing gods” into a bleeping Disney flick? Multiple parties had to have been asleep at the wheel in order to get away with that one.
My current obsession started a few months after Legacy when a convention party crew (sci fi cons in the Pac NW take the room parties seriously) converted their hotel suite to the freaking End of Line, complete with a dude in Castor cosplay spinning Daft Punk albums (he dressed up as Alex for their Clockwork Orange them the following year, making me wonder who in the crew was a Wendy Carlos fan). I stumbled out of there, and I HAD to find Tron fanfic, comic books, the 2.0 game…anything I could get my mitts on. Been here since.
Whos really a threat to games?
IS it big, greedy, multi-million dollar companies like Sony, EA, or Microsoft trying to swindle as much as they can from the consumer?
Is it the US government using games as a form of propaganda?
Is it marketing departments who know nothing about games as an artform, and only know how to dictate orders for popular shooty games to appeal to the 18-25 white male demographic?
NAAAAAAAAAAH, it’s none of THOSE things. The REAL threat is small indie devs, games writers who work for a low-paying salary, critics with a feminist slant, queers, brown people, and women in general. They’re the ACTUAL problem with the game industry you fools. We here at #gamergate are here to hel p
Except all three of those are protected by the Great Wall of China equivalents to lawyers, shills, etc. and are (for now at least) untouchable. Starting small is the best option.
It has nothing to do with indie devs except that one of them indulged in a particular strand of corruption and got backlash for it. Stop making it about feminism when it isn’t.
From what it looks like, the whole gamergate thing boils down to a bad breakup where the parties involved said shit online to hurt one another, and things got embarrassingly blown out of proportion.
